About SFLIG Volunteers and the internship

SFLIG Volunteers hosts international education, healthcare and community programmes in Ghana. This internship connects creative study with arts-based learning activities in the organisation’s education and community programme settings. The emphasis is creative expression, accessible materials and respectful collaboration. It does not provide art-therapy practice or promise therapeutic outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Help prepare visual-arts and craft activities that suit the agreed audience, available materials and programme priorities.
  • Assist staff-led drawing, painting, design or other creative-learning sessions within your skills.
  • Develop visual resources, activity instructions or workshop materials that can be reused by programme staff.
  • Support group participation and adapt an activity for different ages or abilities with staff guidance.
  • Contribute to community-education activities and cultural exchange where these form part of your agreed programme.
  • Review the activity process with staff and reflect on facilitation, accessibility and cross-cultural communication.

Learning objectives and expected outcomes

You may strengthen workshop planning, visual communication, resourcefulness, inclusive facilitation and teamwork. Suggested outputs include a creative workshop plan, reusable activity resources and a reflective process portfolio. Agree outputs and university requirements in advance. Do not interpret participants’ artwork clinically or present creative activity as therapy.

Relevant academic fields

Fine Art, Creative Arts, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Arts Education and related disciplines. Graphic-design skills are relevant to visual learning resources; this is not a commercial design-agency placement.

Required qualifications

Applicants should be able to plan and explain an appropriate creative activity, work safely with materials, collaborate respectfully and adapt to the programme’s audience and resources. Be ready for on-site participation in Ghana and compliance with professional conduct and safeguarding requirements.

Preferred qualifications

Relevant coursework, a small portfolio, workshop assistance, community arts or arts-education experience. Examples of activities you can adapt for others are particularly useful.

Skills you may develop

Visual communication; workshop planning; creative facilitation; resource design; teamwork; adaptability; cross-cultural communication.

Location and on site arrangements

On-site in Ghana. Activities may take place in schools or community programme settings according to your agreed assignment. The specific town, activity location and daily travel arrangements will be provided in your placement information.

Duration schedule and dates (ALL YEAR ROUND PLACEMENT)

Request your preferred Spring or Summer 2027 dates and duration in your application. Availability and start dates require written confirmation by SFLIG Volunteers. Programme activities normally take place on weekdays; your assignment determines the timetable and weekly hours. Discuss university hour and assessment requirements before committing to travel.

Programme coordination and supervision

SFLIG Volunteers hosts and coordinates the internship. Your responsibilities, programme-specific supervision and contact arrangements will be explained before confirmation. Follow programme staff instructions and work within your agreed role and competence. University supervision requirements must be agreed before travel.

Unpaid AND Self Fund Program

This internship is unpaid and self-funded. No salary or stipend is offered. Your approved quotation and placement information will specify the accommodation arrangement, meal provision, included airport/project transport and available support contacts. Room type, dietary requirements and support coverage should be discussed before confirmation.

Culture and optional activities

Living and participating in Ghana offers opportunities to learn about local food, history, traditions and everyday community life. Optional cultural visits or tourism may be discussed separately, subject to availability. They are not placement hours or automatically included benefits; any extra charges should be agreed before booking.

How to apply

Apply through Handshake with your CV and a short statement covering your academic field, relevant experience, learning goals, preferred dates and duration, and any academic-credit requirements. SFLIG Volunteers will review your suitability and discuss the activity match, dates, responsibilities, support arrangements and full costs. Any additional programme checks or documents will be explained during review. Applying does not guarantee acceptance; obtain written placement confirmation and complete the stated requirements before making travel commitments.

Academic credit

Academic credit is determined by your university. Consult your academic adviser or internship coordinator before travel and agree the required hours, supervision and assessment arrangements with SFLIG Volunteers. Any completion documentation must be agreed in advance; a certificate or participation record does not itself award academic credit.

Safeguarding and professional conduct

Follow SFLIG Volunteers’ child-protection rules wherever children participate. Use age-appropriate materials, work visibly with authorised staff, respect consent and avoid private contact or identifying images and personal information in portfolios. Raise safeguarding or safety concerns through the programme’s reporting process.
